What are spicules?
Spicules are microscopic natural needles that form the skeleton of freshwater sponges. During an SQT treatment they are massaged into the skin together with a serum, and they create a great many microscopic channels in it. Through these channels, serums with beta-glucan, peptides, hyaluronic acid and other active ingredients reach the skin. That is why SQT is called bio-microneedling: here the micro-channels are created not by a device, as in microneedling, but by nature itself.
Spicules remain in the skin for up to 72 hours, so for a few days after the treatment you may feel a light tingling. Then comes a light, natural flaking: for 2–5 days the skin may peel a little as dead surface cells are shed and the skin renews itself.
Who it suits
We suggest SQT spicules for:
- acne-prone skin, enlarged pores and blackheads;
- uneven skin tone and dark spots;
- mature skin that is losing firmness, with fine lines;
- dry, dehydrated skin.
If breakouts are extensive, painful or badly inflamed, we recommend seeing a dermatologist first. If you are pregnant, taking any medication or have a skin condition, please tell us before the treatment – together we will decide whether it is right for you.
Four programmes
Each programme uses its own SQT bio-microneedling kit, with a different combination of serums.
Programme for acne-prone skin – for blemish-prone skin that tends to break out: to clear the pores and calm the skin.
Programme for pigmentation – to help brighten dark spots and even out skin tone.
Anti-ageing programme – for mature skin, when firmness, elasticity and fine lines are your concern.
Programme for dry skin – for intensive hydration, to restore the skin barrier and to soften the skin.
We will advise which programme suits you once we have looked at your skin.
How the treatment works
- We cleanse the skin and prepare it for the treatment.
- We spread the spicule serum chosen for your programme over the skin and massage it in.
- To finish, we calm the skin and advise you on how to care for it over the next few days.
Aftercare
- For a few days your skin may tingle slightly – this is normal.
- While the skin is flaking, do not pick or peel it, and do not use scrubs: let it renew itself.
- Go without make-up for the first day, and avoid saunas and swimming pools.
- Use sun protection every day, together with the hydrating products we recommend.
How often
We will advise how many treatments your skin needs, and how often, after your first treatment. Between visits, home care does much of the work, so we also talk through which products are worth using at home.
